DIRECTIONS TO THE HILLS
From the lights on #10 (18th St South) and 110 drive south on #10 hiway for 7kms. You will be turning left just after the bridge and there is a x-c ski sign as advance warning. Turn left on the gravel road heading East. You will see an antique shop (white stucco, black trim) on your right on the corner. Drive East for approx 3km until you get to the first intersection and turn right (south) you are now heading up towards the hills. At the top of the hill there is a left turn into the parking lot.
A litte more info about the Blue Hills of Brandon Trail Run.
Why the race name? Years ago, back in the 60's or early 70's, there was a local singing legend by the name of Russ Gurr. He hailed from the same part of the country as my mother so his name got mentioned in our household when I was a child. Well, he had a bit of a 'hit' back then for a song entitled the "Blue Hills of Brandon". Mr. Gurr had a special way of enunciating his words so as kids in my family we used to sing this song (well part of it anyway) around the dinner table trying to imitate the singing style. So, I don't know if I've ever thought of our Brandon Hills as being blue but in honour of an old song and my family, this is how I thought of the name for this race.
Why the logo? I think of our logo as a Kokopelli runner. The Kokopelli image is known widely in the south western US and dates back well a long time. The Kokopelli image can be seen on cave drawings all over the south wester US and into Mexico. In addition to being a god like icon (for fertility but that's not what I'm thinking), Kokopelli is also known as a trickster. So, what better image to represent a trail run where a runner can get snagged by a tree branch that appears out of no where or tripped or twisted up by rocks and other hidden roots than this litte kokopelli runner (he needs a name). As you come into the finish line covered in dry grasse, bruised and possibly bleeding - instead of blaming your own inattention or clumsiness you can simply declare "Kokopelli did it!".
So there you have it...just in case you were wondering.
